Karen went back to college to study Jewellery Design & Silversmithing having taken a career break to raise her family. From day 1 Karen was quite literally like a kid in a sweetshop – loving the opportunity to express her creativity, experimenting with different techniques to achieve various surface patterns & textures. Karen loves working with the properties of metals, predominantly silver, to develop innovative, individual designs.
Karen takes her inspiration from all around – from everyday emotions and people to architecture – from simple geometry to mother nature.
Karen's signature style is bold and individual contemporary pieces that are lightweight and easy to wear.
The new Hope Collection was inspired by ancient lichens and mosses found on the trunks of trees, thousands of years old in the jungle, at the base of Mount Kilimanjaro near Machame Gate on a recent charity climb.
The Hope Collection features organic, tactile surface pattern and texture achieved by etching – each link individually hand-forged then soldered together to form long, fluid chains. Karen has then introduced colour and further organic texture by adding unusual, rough, unpolished stones such as Lapis Lazuli, Carnelian, Aventurine, Citrine, Lava, Agate slices and Tourmaline.
The Serenity Collection was inspired by Buddhist Singing Bowls – Karen was taught meditation and mindfulness practice following a period of ill health during 2008.
The Serenity Collection features bold, architectural shape and form using clean designs and geometric patterns. The shapes are then oxidized for added depth then edges are filed back for contrast, giving an almost industrial finish.
The Perseverance Collection was inspired by the everyday emotions of keeping normality and calm around a young family when facing ill health.
Karen hand-forged each individual link then textured links by planishing or milling then painstakingly soldered each link to form long, fluid chains.
Karen has been blown away by the positive response from galleries, direct customers, exhibition organisers, arts and crafts organisations and is grateful form their support.
